How We Build Your Deck

From your first call to the final inspection, here's exactly what working with TrueCraft Decking looks like — step by step, with no hidden steps and no vague timelines.

01

Free Consultation & Estimate

We start with an on-site visit to your property — no phone consultations or drive-by quotes. We take precise measurements of your yard, note site conditions (slope, drainage, existing ledger points), and spend time understanding your vision and budget. Within 5 business days you receive a detailed written estimate itemized by material, labor, permits, and any site-specific costs. No commitment required to receive an estimate.

02

3D Design & Material Selection

Once you decide to move forward, we create a photorealistic 3D rendering of your deck using professional design software. You'll see your actual yard with the actual deck in it — not a generic template. We refine the design until you love it: board direction, railing style, stair placement, built-in features, lighting. You also select your materials at this stage: composite or wood, railing system, and hardware finish. Nothing goes to permit until you approve the design.

03

Permit Application

We prepare all required construction drawings — plan view, elevation, footing details — and submit the permit application to your municipality on your behalf. We pay the permit fee (included in your project cost) and track the application through the approval process. Typical approval time in Central PA: 2–4 weeks. We handle any back-and-forth with the code office if additional information is requested. You don't need to visit a township office or make a single phone call.

04

Site Preparation & Footings

With permits in hand, we schedule your build date and begin with site preparation. We mark all footing locations, call PA One Call (811) to check for underground utilities, and excavate to the required 36-inch frost depth required throughout Central Pennsylvania. Concrete tube forms are set level and plumb, concrete is poured, and the inspector verifies footing depth before we continue. This step is critical — shortcuts here cause deck movement and structural failure within years.

05

Framing & Structural Work

After footings cure, we install the post-and-beam structure, ledger board (properly flashed with code-compliant materials to prevent water intrusion), and joist framing. For composite decks, we use pressure-treated framing with proper spacing and ventilation to satisfy manufacturer warranty requirements. A framing inspection is conducted before any decking is installed, confirming the structural work meets PA UCC requirements.

06

Decking, Railings & Finishing

Deck boards are installed with hidden fasteners (where applicable) for a clean, fastener-free surface. Railings, post caps, and balusters are installed to code height and spacing. Stairs are framed and finished. Any built-in features — benches, planter boxes, privacy walls, lighting — are installed at this stage. We use manufacturer-approved installation methods throughout to preserve your material warranty.

07

Final Inspection & Walkthrough

We schedule the final municipal inspection. Once the inspector signs off, we do a thorough walkthrough with you: we show you how to care for your specific decking material, point out any seasonal maintenance steps, provide all warranty documentation (manufacturer and TrueCraft's 2-year workmanship warranty), and answer every question you have. We don't consider a project complete until you're genuinely happy with the result.

What Makes TrueCraft Different

A lot of deck contractors do the basics. Here's what separates TrueCraft from the crowd in Central PA.

We Always Visit Before Quoting

Phone quotes and online calculators give ballpark numbers that turn into change orders. Every TrueCraft estimate starts with an on-site visit so we price your actual project.

3D Design Before Breaking Ground

You see exactly what your deck will look like before we pour a single footing. Changes are free at the design stage; they're expensive after construction starts.

We Pull Every Permit

We handle the entire permit process in all Central PA municipalities. Your deck is code-compliant, inspected, and documented — protecting your insurance and resale value.

36" Frost-Depth Footings, Always

Central PA's freeze-thaw cycle destroys decks built on shallow footings. We excavate to the required depth on every project, documented for your inspection record.

Manufacturer-Compliant Installation

We follow manufacturer installation specifications precisely — proper spacing, ventilation, and fastener patterns — so your material warranty remains valid for its full term.

2-Year Workmanship Warranty

Beyond the manufacturer's material warranty, TrueCraft covers all labor and installation quality for 2 years after project completion. If something isn't right, we fix it.
