Deck Railing Installation in Central PA
Railings are where safety meets design. TrueCraft Decking installs all railing styles across Central Pennsylvania — mostly RDI vinyl and aluminum systems, plus cable rail, glass panels, and composite balusters when a project calls for them.

RDI is the railing brand we install on most TrueCraft decks — primarily their vinyl and aluminum systems, chosen for engineering quality, long-term warranty support, and finishes that stay consistent across railing, privacy, and lighting on the same deck. We also install TimberTech railing when a project calls for it, as a TimberTech PRO Silver installer.

Railings: Where Safety Meets Style
Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code requires railings on any deck surface more than 30 inches above grade. Beyond code compliance, a well-chosen railing system is one of the most visible design elements of your deck — arguably more noticeable than the decking boards themselves.
The railing choice affects the visual weight of your deck (heavy balusters vs. airy cable), the maintenance requirements, the view (cable and glass preserve sightlines; traditional balusters block them), and the price. TrueCraft helps every customer navigate these trade-offs so the railing system is right for their specific deck, yard, and budget.
Pennsylvania Railing Code Requirements
Pennsylvania follows the IRC (International Residential Code) as adopted by the state UCC. Key railing requirements for residential decks:
| Requirement | PA/IRC Standard |
|---|---|
| When railings are required | Any deck surface 30"+ above grade |
| Minimum railing height | 36" for decks under 30" above grade; 42" for 30"+ above grade |
| Baluster spacing | No opening greater than 4" (sphere test) |
| Post attachment | Through-bolted to framing — not surface-mounted only |
| Top rail load resistance | Must withstand 200 lbs concentrated load |
| Cable railing spacing | No opening greater than 3" between cables |
Local municipalities may have stricter requirements. TrueCraft checks local amendments before every install.
Railing Styles We Install
Four distinct styles — each with a different aesthetic, maintenance profile, and price tier.
Traditional Balusters
Most AffordableVertical spindles between posts, available in vinyl, aluminum, composite, or wood. The most common railing style in Central PA — and where RDI's Titan Pro and Endurance vinyl systems do most of their work. Clean, familiar, and available in dozens of colors with no maintenance.
Cable Railing
Mid-PremiumHorizontal stainless steel cables tensioned between posts. Ultra-modern look that preserves views — especially valuable on elevated decks and properties with wooded or yard views. PA code limits cable spacing to 3" maximum. Posts are typically stainless steel or aluminum.
Glass Panel Railing
PremiumFrameless or framed tempered glass panels deliver maximum sightline preservation and a sleek, architectural look. Popular for pool areas and hillside properties. Glass requires occasional cleaning but no structural maintenance.
Horizontal Metal Rail
Mid-PremiumHorizontal flat bars or round rods instead of vertical balusters. A contemporary alternative to cable that's easier to fabricate and slightly more affordable. Increasingly popular in Central PA new construction and modern home remodels.
RDI Railing · Our Primary Line
The Railing We Install Most
Most TrueCraft decks get RDI railing — mainly their vinyl and aluminum systems. Every line below is aluminum-reinforced or all-aluminum, powder-coated or co-extruded for colorfastness, and installed to RDI's published spec so the warranty holds.
Vinyl Systems
Low-maintenance, aluminum-reinforced
- Titan Pro Rail
- RDI’s most popular vinyl system — heavy aluminum reinforcement inside the top and bottom rails. The workhorse on most of our residential builds.
- Endurance
- The long-running RDI vinyl line. Aluminum-reinforced rails with a classic profile that suits traditional Central PA homes.
- Finyl Line
- Vinyl with decorative infill options — including Chippendale patterns — when a porch or front elevation calls for more detail.
Aluminum Systems
Slim profiles, powder-coated finishes
- Avalon
- Rust-resistant aluminum with pre-assembled panels and RDI’s ProLock locking strips — a fast, square, code-compliant install.
- Elevation Rail
- Aluminum posts with horizontal cable infill for elevated decks and yard views, held to the 3" PA cable spacing limit.
- Privacy Rail
- Powder-coated aluminum framing with vinyl infill boards on RDI’s ClickConnect system — railing and privacy screening in one run.

Railing Material Options
Composite Railing
Matches composite decking
Matches your composite deck boards perfectly. No painting, no staining, no rot. Available in the same color families as the decking.
Powder-Coated Aluminum
Most durable
Will never rust, never rot, never need painting. Available in black, white, bronze, and custom colors. Excellent for pool areas.
Wood (PT or Cedar)
Budget / natural
Natural wood balusters and rails to match a wood deck. Requires painting or staining every 2–4 years. Most affordable up front.
Stainless Cable + Wood Top Rail
Popular hybrid
Stainless steel horizontal cables with a pressure-treated or composite top rail cap. Combines the modern cable look with a warmer wood-tone top.
Railing Post Installation: The Details That Matter
One of the most common railing failures in the field — and the most common railing inspection rejection — is surface-mounted posts. A post bolted only through the decking board and into a joist is relying entirely on that single fastener connection to resist lateral loads. It feels solid initially but loosens over time with movement and weather cycles.
TrueCraft always installs railing posts with through-bolting into the rim joist or blocking, using post bases rated for the application. This is the correct method and what every inspector looks for. It is also the reason our railings stay tight and safe for the life of the deck, not just the first few seasons.
Matching Railings to Your Deck Boards
Many composite decking lines include coordinating railing systems designed to match visually. Choosing a matching railing from the same product family creates a cohesive, designed look. TrueCraft also effectively mixes materials — a common choice is composite decking with powder-coated aluminum railing, which reduces cost compared to all-composite systems while maintaining a clean, modern appearance.
